One of the largest halls of Sootopolis Casino had been transformed into a battle arena for Pokémon, and it would be remiss if one of the finest Gym Leaders in Hoenn, the Master of Faster himself, was not in attendance. Of course, he was far from the most skilled trainer there; Top Champion kyle lopez was so heavily favored to win the tournament that it would take a fool to bet on him for any kind of reasonable return. More than half the tournament's entrants had been Gym Leaders at some point, ensuring only top quality battles.

As an Illumina Absol walked ahead of her trainer, the Mauville Leader was greeted with louder booing than one would hear at a postseason game when the refs blew a game-determinative call. The casino regulars were clearly betting on @killian. Furthermore, he had lost the coin toss, so Killian would have the advantage of selecting his Pokémon second, to ensure the best possible matchup. Resheph floated into position in the center of the battle court, the serpent antsy to show the crowd she didn't need to evolve to win. The nervous-looking Gym Leader awaited his opponent to emerge from the red corner.

Killian stepped onto the field, Armarouge and Minior at his side. He flashed a broad smile to the crowd and waved. [break][break]

"Don't be so nervous." Killian mused, looking to Josh Devlin. "It's not a good look for a gym leader to sport." Killian nodded to his Pokemon as he finished speaking. [break][break]

The Armarouge stood tall near the edge of the battlefield, Minior floating in a circle around him. Vision narrowing, the fire warrior aimed for Absol and unleashed a torrent of searing heat from its Armor Cannon. [break][break]

Minior made no attack but began to glow. Cosmic Power from the stars drawn into and hardening its outer shell.[break][break]

The crowd sounded a resounding cheer for Killian as he entered the makeshift stadium. The announcer's voice boomed over loudspeakers.

"In the red corner, Killian Decker ! And in the blue corner, Josh Devlin !"

When the signal to begin was dropped, per his title, Josh's two Pokémon rushed toward Killian's, ready to get on the offensive. "Not yet, Twilight! Get loose!" The brightly-glowing Illumina Absol slid to a stop and reared, prancing about in a SWORDS DANCE that put her racing agility on full display. The edge of her horn-blade began to glint brightly, blinding anyone who looked at its reflection.

Resheph, not receiving a command, anticipated Josh would use his normal battle style of hitting fast and hard. Her tail surrounded in dragon energy, she lunged toward the Minior in a burst of EXTREME SPEED so fast that the crowd could not follow it at all. Perhaps it was too fast for even Killian Decker to follow, too.

- Twilight readies a SWORDS DANCE to attempt to wallbreak Minior down the line. (flavor)

Minior flew backward, slamming into Armarouge as it tumbled. It's quickly tossed aside by the cannoneer and sent hurling at Absol. The Minior shined brightly as it soared. The psychic power of the field transforming its Double-Edge into a deadly bullet. [break][break]

Armarouge snapped his attention to Dragonair. Drained from the other armor cannon, he couldn't risk firing another yet. Instead, he shot off an Energy Ball booster by the sun. [break][break]

"Is this the best you can do Josh?" Killian taunted playfully.[break][break]

Wait, what?

Did that DOUBLE-EDGE have a psychic-type sheen to it? Resheph's burst of EXTREME SPEED, too? And if so, why did Twilight, his Absol, screech after being hit? These were clearly not regulation battles. Josh was going to have to figure out how they worked, and fast, or he was going to take an embarrassing first-round exit.

"You think I'm holding back, Killian?!" Josh roared back, in control of his emotions despite their intensity.

With the SWORDS DANCE over, Twilight was in prime position to take control of the battle as soon as she got an opening. She and Resheph would attempt to pincer the Minior between PSYCHO CUT and DRAGON RUSH, trying to tear the floating Pokémon's natural shield apart.

- Twilight readies a SWORDS DANCE-enhanced PSYCHO CUT, timing it to pincer the Minior between the psychic attack and Resheph's DRAGON RUSH. (70 + 50 = 120) + (100) = 220)

"Do you like fireworks?" Regardless of his answers, Josh would get a front-row seat to otherworldly pyrotechnics.[break][break]

Minior detonated, the Explosion unleashing waves of psychic energy upon the nearby Pokemon. Armarouge shot another Armor Cannon at Absol through gritted teeth.[break][break]

"What do you mean?" Josh idly asked as his Pokémon lined up to take down Killian's Minior. "No... you wouldn't!" he raised his voice.

All the cheering, music, and other noise in the arena was drowned out by the Minior's EXPLOSION that rattled not only the body, but the mind. A rattle so intense that even Twilight, who could stand up to even a legendary Pokémon's psychic attacks, found herself a smear on the wall. What was going on in this tournament? Wasn't there a move that let Psychic-types do this?

MIRACLE EYE.

That was it! Was the entire battlefield under the effect of MIRACLE EYE?

Though powerful, both of Josh's Pokémon managed to survive the detonation of psychic energy. He had the upper hand now, and he wasn't afraid to show it.

"Why would you put your Pokémon through that?!" Josh shouted, his anger starting to build. He was still under control of his emotions, but it was anyone's guess how long it lasted. "Someone who battles with honor would never put the Pokémon they love and care for so much through that! If you can't restrain your Pokémon from such reckless abandon, then we'll do it for you! Twilight, PSYCHO CUT! Resheph, EXTREME SPEED!" The two Pokémon again double-teamed, this time trying to pincer the Armarouge between extremely fast-attacks turned Psychic-type...

Honor? Who did Josh think they were, knights on the battlefield? This was a tournament, and the only thing that mattered was winning. Killian clicked his tongue. [break][break]

Armarouge's burning topknot erupted, the flame twisting around its body into a dome of protective energy. The opposing Pokemon slammed against it, pushing past the fire to slice into Armarouge's body. He grunted but held his ground.[break][break]

"Now - incinerate the Absol!"[break][break]

Armarouge unleashed its Armor Cannon at point-blank range.[break][break]

Twilight let out a screech of anguish after being struck by the Armarouge's best attack. The glowing Absol's lights started flickering as her legs began to shake, the badly bruised Pokémon just barely able to stand. With a glint in her eye, she knew what she had to do.

Twilight's last stand would be a blistering fast QUICK ATTACK. "Resheph, give Armarouge no quarter!" The use of PROTECT was just what Josh was waiting for. "HYPER BEAM!" he commanded. The Dragonair's horn glowed orange, letting out a shrill cry as she fired a surge of orange energy that turned purple, the entire arena rumbling from its fury.

Twilight's Quick Attack: (40 + 50 = 90)
Resheph's Hyper Beam: (150 + 50 = 200)
Total: 290
Resheph does not attack next turn.

Armarouge is quick to conjure a second Protect. The shield of fire cushioned the double douse of blows. It skids back across the field, body halting before Killian. Dropping its arms to the side, Armarouge took several haggard breaths. Each one sent waves of blistering pain shooting down its limbs. [break][break]

It wanted to quit, throw in the towel. Armarouge resisted the urge, burying it beneath coals that ignited in rage. Eyes glowing beneath its helm, Armarouge snapped its head to Absol. The warrior yanked on Absol with its mind, trying to slam the canine into Dragonair.[break][break]
